Labor Thanksgiving Day originates from a ceremony named shinjosai or niinamesai. This ceremony is held at the Imperial Court for the Emperor to offer new rice to the gods of heaven and earth. The Emperor also eats the new rice at the ceremony.
It has taken places annually on November 23 since 1873. The feast day for people to give their thanks for the rice production and celebrate the rice crop of the year is now Labor Thanksgiving Day. Rice is the main staple of the Japanese diet, and so the labor to produce rice can represent many different kinds of labor in Japan.
